Solving Spring Frost Problems

Throughout the World most of the premier winegrowing areas are subject to late Spring frosts.  The Bell Mountain appellation is no exception; objectively, with more severity due to our heightened elevation.  So for several years we have investigated, and experimented with various devices, without positive success.  With research and experience in previous efforts, we built a unit and proved its effectiveness.  Powered by a tractor's PTO, with 3-pint hitch capability, the unit has a 5-foot fan, with rpm output of 770, thus moving the cold air from ground level to the heavens at a rate of 70,000 cfm.  We are constructing additional fans to protect the entire Vineyards.  Patents are pending.

Vineyard Progress

In 2003 we commenced renovation of some of our older Blocks in the vineyards.  In our initial development, we planned Blocks of approximately two acres.  This has enabled effective management such as wine-variety and rootstock selection based on soil profiles.  The planning assists in plant training, pruning, irrigation, with Block maturity and designated harvest dates.

The Spring of 2007 saw major planting of select rootstock and clones in Block 1 with Cabernet Sauvignon, Blocks 2, 3, 4 and 5 with Merlot, Blocks 6-7 with Malbec, and Blocks 10, 11 and 12 with Syrah.  Over 10,000 were planted.

The Spring of 2009 saw an addition of 10,000 new Riesling plants. Plans for the Spring of 2011 include planting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Riesling and the first planting of Viognier. Future plantings are schedule through 2013.
